The Blue house is the re-construction of an abandoned ruin, located on ‘Old Harbour Road’ of Capelas – the historic whaling street on the North side of Sao Miguel Island. Balancing between old and contemporary, the design takes advantage of the existing elements, while creating contrast and balance.  The primary construction elements of all the walls, floors, roofs and embedded structure were pre-fabricated and assembled on-site in 10 days. The chosen panel system provided very accurate assembly, high thermal efficiency and a carbon neutral result. The blue facade material is up-cycled ocean plastic that has been collected and re-cast into cladding material for this project.

The Line House occupies a challenging thin site, wedged into a traditional fishing village on the North side of Sao Miguel island. We used a typical angled roof form stretched the length of the buildable site, carved into the functional volumes which were all connected by a thin glass corridor. This results in an abstract traditional village, while fulfilling all the spacial requirements, while allowing the garden to infiltrate into the building, giving the impression of walking through the garden when circulating from one volume to another.

Solid Seats is an installation for the Walk&Talk Art Festival aimed at both activating a disused part of the city, and highlighting the natural qualities of the local lumber – Cryptomeria. The wood elements were kept in the same arrangement that they were found in the saw mill, with various angled cuts made to offer different seating and lounging types.

Largo Carreiro is an underutilised public space with a potential to be activated as an anchor in the urban fabric of Ponta Delgada. This design takes the simple urban element of the bench and scales it up to an iconic sculpture that serves various uses from daily seating to public gatherings. This triple arched bench is an abstract reference to the historic triple arch ‘doorway to the city’ on Praça de Gonçalo Velho.

This generous site has been cared for by the Portuguese cork farmers for generations, existing in harmonious balance between cork bark cultivation and natural eco-system. The introduction of two more element – tourism & learning, can only be achieved with delicate precision. The extreme heat of the summer is mitigated by sinking some of the structures partially below ground to access cooler temperatures, and integrating large shading overhangs. Various structures embedded into the landscape perform unique functions and interact with their respective micro-environments.

Set within a small village on the South coast of Sao Miguel island, this design breaks up the functional spaces into a cluster of volumes to blend the building into it’s surroundings, and create a variety of spacial experiences and constant changes of light and shadow. The center of the space is pinned by a skinny courtyard which drives the circulation paths and floods the space with reflected light. The garden-side facades are derived from the traditional whale watching structures found along the Azorean coastlines.

This sculpture designed for the city of Capelas in the Azores is an abstract representation of the traditional whaling boats. By using a hyperbolic paraboloid, we were able to recreate the complex double curvature of a ocean-faring boat with simple straight steel elements.

Largo Matriz da Patria currently has many attributes such as well developed trees and iconic surroundings, yet the road surrounding it and the circulation creates island effects and fragmentation. This proposal pedestrianises the entire space and uses both circulation paths as well as the existing trees to generate a new topographical urban playground to be used by young and elder residents alike.

Ponta Delgada city’s push to clear the historical centre of cars has created a need for extra parking along the perimeter of the pedestrian zone. This design increases the existing capacity three times, and provides healthy activities on the top deck so that daily workers can drive into town, park their cars, engage in sports then walk to to work.

SYNTHetiscapes is a sustainable initiative investigating the development of adaptable structures able to fulfill Green Roof requirements by weaving physical and biological processes into a self-sufficient ecosystem. The project is located on top of The Flat, a residential development in downtown Los Angeles combining rental units with an dynamic public programming and a ground floor restaurant. The Rooftop Garden consists of a suspended corrugated metal blanket forming a series of green channels or plow lines. An alternating series of hard and soft surface treatments weave together a fertile ground for the production of edible species and a unique series of platforms and seating spaces overlooking the downtown skyline to the east and the extensive Los Angeles horizon towards the south. Each plow-line channel accommodates an engineered growth medium, much less dense than natural soil in order to minimize dead loads, and an automatic drip irrigation system.

This proposal attempts to realize the transcendental journey of Jose Saramago’s novel “The Tale of the Unknown Island”, and the influences of Portuguese literature on the search for oneself and the unknown, in the spirit of discovery and creativity. The proposal evokes a journey to an unexplored territory of architecture that aspires to operate beyond conventional building practices.
The materials of stone and steel were chosen to compliment each other, and the design exploited each one’s characteristics, creating a multitude of spatial and sensory experiences throughout.
The project alludes to Portugal’s rich history of commerce, while pointing towards future achievements.
The proposal consists of the construction of a large “boat of stone” as inspired by Saramago’s tale that will “moor” at various public events, and hold a variety of events within. By interweaving a narrative with innovative fabrication techniques, it aims to become an inspirational approach towards a future of new territories and discoveries to come.
