Due to economic realities and population dispersion, urban centers have experienced significant abandonment, leading to changes in the social activities previously associated with public city spaces. The relocation of traditional street services to city outskirts has been the primary factor contributing to the neglect of the built environment in historic centers.
As the urban center reflects the image of a healthy and promising local economy, the maintenance and development of self-esteem, tied to community cohesion, create a network of opportunities for sustainable development.
The identity of cities is shaped by their experiences, implemented activities, and functions, particularly at the street level. The use of these areas and the preservation of architectural heritage have an immediate impact on recognizing an active, rejuvenated, and responsible community.
The proposal aimed to reconstruct the city through initiatives designed to restore social dynamics and revitalize the local economy. The primary objectives of this initiative were to stimulate and implement entrepreneurial ideas, cultural projects, and artistic interventions that engaged directly with the public.
To achieve this, the proposal outlined a plan to collaborate with the community in a dedicated effort to revitalize the urban center of Ponta Delgada on São Miguel Island (Azores). This involved not only street activities but also the temporary (re)occupation of currently inactive spaces.
